Winter in South Western Montana's Winter Wonderland

Not far from crowds in West Yellowstone, Montana, and Island Park, Idaho, our western Montana Lodge offers a winter adventure getaway. Play hard on your snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes - then return to your private cabin, a great meal, and pure relaxation at Elk Lake Resort.

Centennial Valley Winter GloryDo you like winter? At Elk Lake Resort, we see winter as a magical time. When a pure white blanket drapes the countryside, its beauty is seen through different eyes. The dark smudge of the pine trees. The slender willow branches waving at the sky. The snow capped rock looking like a chocolate cone topped with vanilla ice cream. The soldierly fence with his cocked beany cap. All these images and more create a winter landscape of incredible beauty.

Then there is the wildlife. Moose are frequently seen nearby. Occasional glimpses of fox and coyote help us identify the delicate tracks weaving up the hillside. A lone grouse. A bald eagle. A pair of trumpeter swans. An occasional duck. An otter family. All these and more remind us the valley is still alive - still home to numerous residents more hardy than us.

Our Western Montana Lodge in WinterMost are familiar with the sights of winter, but what about her sounds. The tick, tick, tick on your hood as you ski through the softly falling snow. The shush-shush of your skies keeping time with the shoo-squeek, shoo-squeek of your poles. The wind whispering in the treetops overhead. The lake's bass-voice when the ice booms its deep-throated call. The yipping of a lone coyote. The swans chatter. The silence. Revel in the silence!

The snow may always be white, but watch it take on a pink glow as the sun lights the early morning ski. See those gold fingers stroke its face as the sun beams its goodnight. Watch the blue-bird sky turn hot pink, rusty orange, golden yellow, or even turquoise green. Remember the childhood joy of matching shapes to floating clouds. This, and more, make winter in the Centennial such a unique place to be.
